Hey, guys. I find I'm learning more and more Australian English all the time. I thought it might be fun and possibly useful to any non-Aussie people that join the guild if we throw together a list of words that we're likely to see in guild chat that makes non-Australians say "huh?"

Please post replies with any that might be useful... or to make a correction

cheers = thanks
ta = thanks
snags = sausages
mate = friend, buddy
wanker = jackass
barbie = barbecue
rooted = fucked
OI! = Hey!
Shiela = Woman
Bloke = Man
Chopper Ried = Hardened badass
Neville Bartos = useless wanker
footy = rugby
pommes = rugby team (first one that came to mind)
no wuckers (short for no wucking furries) = no worries
she'll be right = no worries
fetid dingo's kidney(s) = nonsense, bullshit, a pile of Bollocks
FFS = for fuck's sake
$$$$ = awesome stuff, awesome loot
Bugger = dammit / gosh and bother / oh gee wiz / shit! / etc
Bollocks = see "bugger"
Load of bollocks = a lie
pigs = cops / police

And a link to an Australian slang website, compliments of Falern.

no wucking furries = pleasnt way of saying no f**king Worries or No problem.

Fetid Dingo Kidney or Dingo's Kidneys (as in thats a pile of dingoes kidneys)

A Dingo is a doglike creature found in Australia. A dingo kidney is what the dingo uses to extract waste from the dingo's blood stream. When the dingo dies the kidney, along with the rest of the dingo, becomes quite ripe. I mean it smells bad like you wouldn't believe. A fetid dingo kidney has no known value. Hmm, I think the exact phrase is 'A fetid dingo's kidneys'.

Basically - "thats a pile of Bollocks" for those conversant with english slang.

In Australia, footy or football as it is properly known, refers to Rugby Union, Rugby League or Australian Rules.

That other weird game where overpaid actors run around with this round ball and kick it and aren't allowed to touch it with their hands (except for the goal keeper and on throw ins) is known as soccer.

If you say football to the average Australian, if they are in Victoria and South Australia, they will think you are talking about Aussie Rules, if you are in NSW or Queensland, they will think you are talking about Rugby League. Rugby Union is quite often referred to as Union to distinguish it from League. Or, in some parts, Thugby Onion.

Rugby League - a game invented by gentlemen and played by thugs
Rugby Union - a game invented by thugs and played by gentlemen

Actually, in Australia, as in most other countries, football properly refers to association football (aka soccer by a minority of heathens).

The governing body is the FFA (Football Federation of Australia).

Rugby League is governed by the ARL (Australian Rugby League) while Rugby Union is governed by the ARU (Australian Rugby Union).

Admittedly, Australian rules football (aka aerial pingpong) is governed by the Australian Football League. But then Victorians (where it originated) have always had delusions of grandeur when it comes to sport.

Dream on, just because Les "I'msoanalIcannotmispronounceanynamenomatterhowstupid" Murray says it's football and a handfull of Eurotrash wannabes agree doesn't make it anything other than a 4th string game with no balls that will always be called soccer.

so there!

I've always known "Soccer" as Football, but my dad's english so prolly got biased influence :P

How anyone can watch Rugby is beyond me.. they go up and down the field in lines. Why it's referred to as Football is a mystery to me too, since they rarely ever kick the damn thing.

It's ok Curt. I know it stings that more people participate in "soccer" in Australia, than any of the other "football" codes. :P

Not really, i used to coach Australian rules u/11's. I used to tell the parents to take their younguns to soccer, bring em back when they are about 9. They always did.

so no, 1/2 the soccer players in australia are under 9 nine years of age, so I don't feel threatened yet. :)
